Background:
CFM International RISE ("Revolutionary Innovation for Sustainable Engines") is an open rotor engine being developed by CFM International, a 50/50 joint venture between GE Aerospace of the United States and Safran Aircraft Engines of France. The engine is planned to support sustainable aviation fuels and is projected to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 20% compared to its predecessor.
The 1973 oil crisis led to rising oil prices in the 1970s, prompting engine manufacturers to investigate new technologies to reduce fuel consumption, including open rotor (also known as propfan) engines. However, none of these designs made it into production aircraft, primarily due to falling oil prices and concerns about the high noise levels of these engines.
In the years before the RISE project was announced, both Safran and GE Aviation had experimented with open rotor-based engine designs. Safran conducted ground tests of an open rotor engine in 2019 as part of the EU Clean Sky project, while GE conducted wind tunnel tests of a derivative of the GE36 engine in the early 2010s in collaboration with the US Federal Aviation Administration.
Program Announcement
CFM International announced the RISE program in June 2021 as the anticipated successor to the CFM LEAP turbofan engine, scheduled for entry into service in the mid-2030s. At the 2022 Farnborough Airshow in July of that year, CFM International announced plans to begin flight testing of the RISE engine on an Airbus A380-based testbed in 2026.
In June 2023, GE tested the first rotating components of the new engine, pairing the first-stage high-speed, low-pressure turbine with a GE F110 military test engine. By the end of 2023, GE was producing test components with the goal of producing a demonstrator engine for flight testing. The demonstrator will pair an open fan assembly with a GE Passport gas generator.
